I've been coming here about 8 years. What drew me in, and defines the church, is how welcoming they are. The leadership and the congregation lead with grace. There is a focus on serving God and each other through community and actions. This is an LGBT-affirming church, and when the pastor says "all are welcome", she means it. It leans socially progressive without being overtly political. Love, not judgement, is emphasized. The main service is at 9:30am and lasts about an hour. Children begin in the main service with their parents and then are dismissed to the children's program. There is an active social gathering on the patio after service with coffee and treats. I would encourage you to stay for 15-30 minutes rather than sneak out the back - I guarantee someone will come and talk to you! Methodism has a rich musical tradition thanks to the Wesley brothers and we have a fantastic choir. Praise is mostly traditional hymns and the church sings together, as opposed to a praise band signing to the church. Accompaniment is usually by piano, though we also have guest musicians. Communion (the Lord's Supper) is the first Sunday of the month. Services are lightly liturgical - more so than an evangelical church but much less so than a Catholic Mass. We say the Lord's Prayer together every Sunday. Come and visit us and see for yourself. This is a place that feels like all truly are welcome. The church members are so friendly and you get the sense that they really care about each other and, through their programs and services, they are putting God’s word into deeds throughout the community. The sermons are inspiring, the choir is second to none, and the work of this church is alive and well. I came to this church at age 8, 51 years ago. It never fails that visitors tell us that our members are some of the most welcoming people that they have met at any of the churches they tried. Where they were ignored at other churches, they were made to feel welcome here: Introduced around the Gathering Grounds after service and invited to chat as they were comfortable. All ages are equally welcome and we have wonderful children's and youth programs. Plus we are known for our choir. Belong, Believe, Be Love! UUMC has been a home for my family for 50 years. The gospel is preached each Sunday along with beautiful music from our choir & accompanist. For all ages there are classes & events which encourage us to learn about our faith and how to practice Christ’s love in action. Multiple members actively participate in the many outreach programs. Our church motto summarizes this well: Belong, Believe & Be Love. Mickey Chase My husband and I were looking to “belong” to a Church family and we absolutely found it in University United Methodist Church. It’s everything we were looking for. A warm Pastor (Cathi Capp) who truly wants everyone to feel welcome. There are no exclusions- only inclusion! For anyone new to Irvine or is out there Church shopping, come on in and be marvelled. The congregation couldn’t be nicer- in addition, our post services provide the best baking in Irvine. You’re all invited🙏😁
