In March 1968, parishoners shouted "Amen!" from the church pews after Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. proclaimed that racism was still a glaring reality and that it was "time for somebody in Washington to say we made a mistake in Vietnam." Just weeks later, he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his efforts to end segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other nonviolent means. I learned this recently: “The [Second Baptist] church has been an important force in the Civil Rights Movement, hosting national conventions of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Persons ("NAACP") in 1928, 1942, and 1949, and also serving as the site of important speeches by Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and others.” We went here with our high school choir in March 2015 to sing for their congregation. It was an incredibly moving experience, and their entire congregation was so welcoming and kind to us. After the meeting, they served us lunch in the basement of the church, and wouldn't even let us help clean up. These are some of the kindest and most Christ-like people I've ever met. I highly recommend visiting this historic building where Martin Luther King Jr. spoke just three weeks prior to his death. You'll be sure to have a wonderful experience. The rich history, incredible spirit, and caring leaders make this a wonderful Church to attend. Ample seating for large event. Every seat a great seat. Dynamic pastor. Parking lots near by.
