Worst church experience I have ever had. Quick edit: this is a direct quote from the sermon “… the main critique. They did not love God. It was an exercise in missing the point. Now listen, we have a name for that in 2026. Here's the name. The name is nominal Christianity.” So for the church’s response to my review, I heard the pastor loud and clear. He said the main criticism of Jesus towards people is those who go to church but do not fully go for the love of god. Demanding total devotion from the jump while shaming those who are still seeking, those who would be “Nominal Christians”, is a hallmark of high-control groups. This 'believe-or-else' mentality doesn't foster faith; it enforces a performance of blind obedience. End of edit I grew up catholic, went through all the sacraments (except marriage), did Sunday school my whole childhood, picked religious electives in high school and college because I was interested, but eventually I decided to take a break from religion. I considered myself agnostic for a while because I did not think I could definitely say the high power was God. Then I found out about Taoism because it taught that you don’t need to name anything, you can just be happy the world is beautiful without trying to find higher answers. Around 2 years ago I decided to start going back to church because I thought there might be signs pulling me back into it and I was looking to better my life. Time after time, I got hit with resistance from members of the church members when I said I’m still questioning my religious beliefs. I kept trying to dig deeper though and trying to connect more on my own terms by myself, because I felt like an outcast and didn’t want to give the same hostility back to the people who gave it to me. I decided to check out The Heights for the first time today and the lead pastor’s sermon made me realize I am done with church. His sermon focused on the angry Jesus, “the Jesus with a whip.” It was about how Jesus will stand up for what is right in the church. About how angry is a good thing, it’s how things get done when you’re truly passionate about something. I actually liked that message and agreed to a point. What I despised was how he finalized his message. He said the people that Jesus hates the most and would whip, are the people who go to church and are not full believers, even those ones who are trying to believe, aka me. He talked about how we are the worst type of people and we need to be punished. I had to walk out. This is the reason I stepped away from religion in the first place. For one, how are you supposed to get new followers? You want people to start believing but you also don’t want people who are looking for religion to be in your church? That makes no sense, especially when he stated that he wants to baptize 365 people in 365 days, you just told everyone who is considering baptism that Jesus hates them more than anyone else. Secondly, how do you think it’s forgiving and understanding to outcast everyone who has different beliefs? That’s the reason I stepped away from religion. The hatred towards people with other beliefs, or questioning beliefs. You preach love thy neighbor to the world, then when you’re by yourselves you teach all others should be punished and not allowed to be in your community. I do not and will not ever have that mindset. I will accept everyone who is trying to be better no matter their beliefs or non beliefs. As long as you have good intentions, you’re good in my eyes. This church doesn’t have good intentions towards those who have differing beliefs and it honestly sickens me. I am honestly done with Catholicism as a whole now. His single minded thinking and telling everyone that he expects everyone who attends that church to think the same is deplorable. If you want to find “salvation,” or to better yourself, but you’re not a full believer, I implore you to look elsewhere as you will be considered to be the most despisable type of person there is, according to the leader of The Heights. You will encounter God here as the Heights is a radically new testament church. Strong teaching, deep community, and missions focused. Not focused on the seating capacity but the sending capacity with church plants and local and global missions. Leadership is so clearly following what the Lord would have for this church. Come and be a part of what God is doing in Denver through the Heights. I have attended The heights for over a year I was baptized on March 22 2026 I love this church the service is so great.I never wanna leave the church. Please join us Went today for the first time so my review is based on just one visit, but MAN... how exciting to see what God is doing in Denver, just blocks from us. Totally packed, sound teaching, good music, pastor was actually funny too at times, but quite serious at others, perfect balance. A vibrant congregation from high schools to 50s and 60s and beyond. Really enjoyed it. Looking for a great group of people to connect with and do life with? Check out the Heights. They are the real deal and the church at it's best!
