On July 24,1987, almost 39 years ago, I was baptized as a disciple of Jesus Christ and I am eternally grateful to God for helping me come to the Truth of the gospel at the age of 40. I prayed specifically for the Acts 2:42 church, and asked God how I can know for sure that it is His Church. Then I realized that I must trust him and ask him for a sign, as I was desperate to find His Church in Acts 2:42. I prayed with all my heart that he would have someone knock on my door 3 times and then I would ask that person 5 test questions from the Bible to be sure it was His Act2:42 Church. 1. What is the name of your Church? Answer: "Church of Christ" (This was the name of that worldwide movement in 1987). 2. How often do you meet? Answer: 3 times a week, but we are to encourage one another daily, (since we now have telephones I spent five years in this church, and it remains the most painful experience of my spiritual life. At first, it appeared loving and familial—but that “love” quickly revealed itself as conditional. The church teaches a works-based form of Christianity, asserting that salvation can be lost at any time. This directly contradicts the assurance of John 10:28: “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” Leadership and Culture The leadership is marked by hypocrisy and moral compromise, frequently condemning others’ sins while excusing their own, including adultery. As Jesus said in Matthew 7:5, “You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” They manipulate Scripture to control rather than to heal—using the Bible as both sword and shield to justify pride and deflect accountability. Members are often belittled, intimidated, and silenced in the name of “discipleship,” a practice far removed from Ephesians 4:29’s call to “build others up according to their needs.” Doctrine and Practices Favoritism and double standards are widespread. The Holy Spirit’s guidance is routinely replaced with the opinions of “disciplers,” whose authority outweighs Christ’s commands. Services resemble motivational rallies more than reverent worship. As Colossians 2:8 warns, “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition rather than on Christ.” Finances and Family Values Members are pressured to give financially far beyond their means, under the guise of “building churches,” though much of it seems to enrich leadership. Scripture cautions in 1 Timothy 6:10, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” Even family duties are neglected, as members are urged to prioritize ministry over their loved ones—contrary to 1 Timothy 5:8, “Anyone who does not provide for their relatives...has denied the faith.” Final Experience When I finally left, leaders told me, “We don’t need you, we won’t miss you, and the church will move on without you.” That arrogance speaks volumes. Proverbs 16:18 reminds us, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Conclusion Avoid this organization at all costs. It masquerades as a church but operates more like a cult, spiritually abusing and exploiting those who genuinely seek God. There are many Christ-centered congregations that truly love, disciple, and restore people in truth and grace. As Jesus warned in Matthew 7:15, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” I've been going to this church the past 5 months since I moved to Chicago and its been really a great experience! The whole congregation is not just very loving but also keeps me accountable how to live according to the Word of God! I love that we have an amazing singles ministry comprised with a lot of professionals, we get to learn and grow together in our spiritual walk, and have lot of fun while worshipping God! Studying the Bible with women here really helped me deepen my convictions and have a closer relationship with God! Jesus’ command to go and make disciples of all nations is alive in this church. I prayed in the beginning of this year for God to show up in my life and a month later was invited to church and to study the Bible. I was inspired by the love of God and the biblical leading of this church. If you want to be with a group of people who are lovingly obedient in the teachings of the Bible, please check this church out! I love being a part of a church that is extremely focused on God’s word!! The word of God is preached every Sunday! Less about us but more about Jesus, the son of God!! I also appreciate the breakfast table provided every Sunday!! It truly feels like you’re a part of a family 💗🙏🏾
