I can’t tell you what a relief it was to find a church like Hope. After growing up and participating in larger churches I felt it was time to bring my family to a church that was more family and community focused. The reason we decided to stay was every week my wife and I would walk away with so much to discuss about the sermon and what we learned. Pastor Jon is always trying his best to teach the word as accurately as he can manage, which I really respect. And his sermons always focus on compassion and empathy for the marginalized. I finally feel like I have a church that cares about the world and the disenfranchised as much as I do! Worship is much more intimate, usually just a guitar, piano and singers. So if you really connect with simplicity in worship this is your spot! If you like a big overproduced worship set, maybe not for you. This is an awesome place to raise a family. There are even toys and activities at the back of the sanctuary if you prefer to be able to watch your child while you listen to the sermon. If you are looking for a COMMUNITY, we would love for you to come join us, you have a place here and I’m beyond thankful God led me to this church! me & my children went here for a little while. it seems people here (including the pastor) are really unaccepting and judgemental towards “new members”. especially young women with children. As soon as so walked into Hope, I noticed a table with crayons, dolls and cars in the back of the sanctuary. I was used to dropping my kids off in the kids room at other churches, and appreciated the idea that I could worship and learn WITH them, and truly model for the what Sunday participation looks like. I had two yr old at the time who played with the cars and made vroom noises. I would shush him in an effort to be polite in a new church, but I was told that it was fine. This concept was so new to me, but I really needed it. Motherhood is so much work and to go someplace where you don’t have to worry as much about your kids allowed me to relax on another level. After the service, Pastor Jon introduced himself and his response to my apologies about the vroom vrooms during his sermon. He immediately replied “Jesus said let the children come” and realized I was someplace special. The community is small, you’ll recognize similar faces each week, and you’ll notice that it is a true community unlike some churches where there seems to be categories of people in charge, and people who attend. This is not like that at all. I don’t actually know the details and I’m not a full member but I can say that the handful of times we’ve been, it appears that the church is more like a very large family. It seems that everyone pitches in, maybe doing a reading, or bringing donuts for the cafe social hour after service, or helping in the kids rooms, or even playing music for worship. It’s a very diverse population as well, as small as it is, it’s far from homogeneous and alll ages and all socioeconomic backgrounds. I’m unsure how they pull it off haha. But it’s beautiful and I appreciate that for my kids. I felt the need to share my experience in case there’s another tired mama like me out there who wants to worship, and wants community, and misses their kids because they’re at daycare all week and appreciates the idea that church could be a place where you can spend more quality time with them in the company of so many welcoming people. If you’re on a journey to find your church home, I’m praying for you and with you 🙏🏽 Your community is out there. Starting going to that church around 1960. My father and I use to take turns ringing the bells in the tower( no longer there I see) on Sunday's. Back then it was called The Methodist Church, then First United Methodist Church. I still remember Reverend Leatherman.Got married there in 1976 by Reverend Dripps. Just thinking of all the good times. Back when living in Orland was pretty much like watching episodes of Leave it to Beaver. Great time's, the best. I hope not much has changed. Got a little nostalgic, good for the heart and soul. A big hello goes out to all the Mr. Ed's IGA alumni. Bless us all. It is a good place where our pastors and members are focused on social justice and building community while allowing for, and working through, differences in theology.
