What visitors say

The Hancock UCC is a wonderful church great for families with young children. It has music, worship and fellowship and education for all ages. Hancock United Church of Christ is a progressive Christian church. Their morning service is traditional. The evening service (September to May), is more organic. At Hancock belonging is as important as believing. What holds us together is our covenant of membership: we all belong to one community together. Worship, and the music therein, are central to our life together as a faith community.” At morning worship, our worship leaders open scripture in ways that are authentically Christian, but also radically inclusive, progressive, and relatable to your life. Our music directors choose songs that are new and life-giving, and those that are familiar and laden with good memories. But maybe most importantly, when you worship with us, you’ll meet the people with whom you’ll serve and grow spiritually, the people who will deliver you meals when tragedy strikes and pray for you when you’re ill, and the people whose children will learn and grow with yours, from Church School all the way through our thriving High School Youth Group. Service to others and working to bring about a more just world are central to our life together at Hancock Church. Hancock members engage in a wide variety of service and justice activities. We volunteer at the local food pantry and provide fresh food for it from the Interfaith Garden; provide lunches and financial support to the Outdoor Church of Cambridge; send relief supplies and rebuilding help to communities devastated by Hurricane natural disasters. We help build houses for those without decent shelter; and advocate and bear witness in support of just laws here in Lexington, at the Massachusetts State House, and in Washington. Every week we give our offering to a mission partner working to make the world a better place. At evening worship, Worship at The Well, the music director leads The River Rock Band, and they play widely eclectic variety of music from ancient spirituals, folk, jazz and blues, bluegrass, and some beloved old hymns updated with a folk, jazz or bluegrass feel. We do a LOT of communal singing. Every worship service at The Well is different, but you can expect a welcome, opening hymn, passing the peace, the message (which is usually some whet shorter than a morning sermon there or at most churches), voluntary collection of donations for one of our mission partners, all of whom do wonderful work for those in need. And then we share our joys, concerns, hopes, and grief by lighting candles. (One can come up to light a candle or ask the worship leader to, and speak their prayer aloud, or simply hold it in their heart after the lighting of the candle). Our service ends with communion which is observed every Sunday, and is done by intinction. Folks come up to the alter and receive a piece of bread dipped in juice. (Due to covid concerns, the communion leader tears the bread and dips it, rather than every individual tearing the bread and dipping it. Should their be a spike again, we may go back to individually wrapped communion kits with wafers and cups of juice. But it will always be every week! The morning service is a more "traditional" service with once a week communion (bread and a small cup of juice), standing to sing from a hymnal, and prayers prayed from the pulpit by the ministers or a seminarian. But the content and sermons are as progressive as the church! Hancock has many opportunities for service, from the local food pantry, our community garden, and much much more! Warm, welcoming, supportive, enriching worship community with programs for all ages - children, youth, and adults. Staff are responsive, knowledgeable, innovative and also traditional. A vibrant, exciting place. Easter sunrise service at the Belfry acknowledging those in our families who have gone before us as we share their names and share communion. Beautiful.... Excellent community with a shared commitment to social justice.
