What visitors say
This is the most beautiful biggest church I have ever been in. The sheer beauty inside and out is almost overwhelming. I was lucky to see Robert Plant there. The sound was the best i heard on this tour my third show. The crowd was better than the other venues as they were mostly silent during the songs. Robert is doing age appropriate music includes a song from 1790. Visit the church id you can. Entry to the cathedral costs now. The outer grounds are open and free all days, but inner grounds are closed weekdays. The statues are very cool. A lot of the land has been sold since I last visited, presumably to pay for finishing the building. I was heartened to see they provide services (food and clothing, possibly hygiene kits) to homeless people now, as is right. The stonework always has lots of interesting variety and is worth looking carefully at. Bet a guided tour would be fascinating, but I didn’t have time this visit. The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City is an impressive landmark that architecture and history enthusiasts should not miss. Getting there is convenient—simply take the A train to Cathedral Parkway (110th St) and enjoy a short 7-minute walk to the cathedral. Often regarded as one of the largest Anglican cathedrals in the world, its sheer scale is breathtaking. Begin your visit by admiring the Gothic façade, which is adorned with intricate details, sculptures, and stonework that set the tone for the wonders within. Upon entering, you’ll be greeted by a vast, majestic interior featuring soaring ceilings, massive columns, and stunning stained-glass windows that fill the space with beautiful, shifting light throughout the day. Admission fees are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $10 for students for sightseeing visits, and it is well worth the price. Take your time exploring; each chapel has its own unique character, artwork, and symbolism. Be sure to check out the impressive nave, beautifully crafted altars, and the various architectural styles that reflect different periods of construction. In addition to its remarkable architecture, the cathedral frequently hosts art installations, cultural events, and concerts, adding another layer to the experience. The surrounding grounds are also serene and worth exploring, providing a quiet escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Whether you are drawn by its history, spirituality, or design, St. John the Divine promises a memorable and enriching visit. This is an absolutely gorgeous cathedral. In addition to the architecture of the church, you can see wonderful exhibits demonstrating the community nature of the church and its commitment to social justice and the arts. I performed with a choir there decades ago. This is the first time I've been back in years, and it is just as magnificent as I remembered. St. John the Divine is equal parts large and majestic. Somehow the church’s facade may be outdone by the incredible fountain in its garden. A must see for anyone on the upper upperwest side.
