I attended a performance of Handel’s Messiah at First Congregational United Church of Christ, and the venue itself is genuinely beautiful. The church’s architecture, high ceilings, and historic character create a reverent and visually impressive atmosphere that feels very appropriate for sacred and classical music. The acoustics were strong, allowing the choir and orchestra to be heard clearly throughout the space. One challenge for me was the seating. The wooden pews are quite hard and became uncomfortable over the course of the performance, especially for extended sitting. I later learned that seat cushions are available if requested, which would likely make a noticeable difference. Unfortunately, I wasn’t aware of this at the start of the concert, and it did impact my overall comfort. As for the concert itself, the performance was well done and clearly involved a great deal of preparation and talent from the musicians and singers. Many audience members appeared deeply engaged and appreciative of the presentation. Personally, however, Handel’s Messiah just isn’t my particular style of music. While I respect its historical importance and the quality of the performance, I found it difficult to stay fully engaged throughout. Overall, this is a beautiful and well-maintained venue that would be an excellent setting for those who enjoy classical or choral music. While the concert itself wasn’t quite my preference, the craftsmanship, setting, and professionalism of the performers were evident and appreciated. I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding in this historic church! I love it is a place that welcomes all couples and the staff was just a dream to work with. I would recommend them for your downtown church wedding! Fun place. The choir was good. I went on a Sunday morning g at 10:30. The architecture was really rad. Wonderful service! Congregation is well funded as they demolished the school and built the shinny new apartment building in gentrified Portland providing all the funding for their mission. Very supportive of local Muslim community. Friday Muslim prayer (jummah) offered every Friday at 1:00pm upstairs. Visiting imams rotate to offer different styles and messages in their khutba (sermon). We thank the Church for being generous hosts!
