This beautiful, historic Episcopal church is an exemplar of the Gothic Revival style. Built between 1847-1848, the original design is attributed to English architect Richard Cromwell. The church maintains gardens, most noteworthy for its roses. The congregation is committed to serving the poor and needy. This is a stunning church. I'm glad to have discovered this church in the COVID age of streaming Masses when I was looking for a new church. I get a very warm and welcoming feeling from the clergy, and the sermons have been an inspiration during these dark days. "For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him". With a heavy heart I say that this is not a God fearing church. I went to the Handel's Messiah Sing along. The choir director gave a small speech at the beginning, saying that we are gathered here because of a love of music. Not once did he mention God. Christians sing to give glory to God, not to ourselves. To say that our songs of praises are for ourselves and not for the glory of God is heretical. I pray that God warms their hearts to Him that they might turn to the Lord and receive mercy. An exceptional place to worship. It is beautiful; beyond that it is welcoming. On any given day one is likely to find some of the most affluent and some of the poorest residents of Philadelphia in the same space. The clergy knows everyone. All are welcome.
