What visitors say

Founded as Greenville Baptist by 10 members in 1831, the Downtown Baptist Church’s original congregation has had several name changes over its more than 150-year history. Replacing an earlier church building on the banks of the Reedy River, the currently named Grace Church Downtown was built as the new home for Greenville Baptist in 1858. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places as Downtown Baptist Church, it was designed by acclaimed architect Samuel Sloan. Greenville Baptist officially changed its name to First Baptist Church in 1890. A Sunday School building was added in 1914 beginning a flurry of construction the following year. In 1915, all three facades were altered. The sanctuary was extended by about seventeen feet and the floor was angled into a slope. Two rows of pews became three, and the pulpit area was expanded with an organ loft and choir gallery. The interior layout has remained largely unchanged since then. 2 front doors were added to each side of the original single door and the stairway was widened by another bay on each side. By 1930 the church had become the largest in Greenville County. In 1940 the church was remodeled, and an auxiliary building was constructed on the grounds. A three-story building was added in 1950. The congregation had more than 2,500 members in 1957 as another addition was completed. A majority of congregation felt that a larger church was needed, and in the spring of 1974, they moved into a new building on Cleveland Street, taking the First Baptist name with them. A smaller group chose to stay in the older structure using the new name Downtown Baptist Church. The building was again renovated in 2011, removing the side galleries and balconies that were added in 1915. Despite all these modifications the basic design, decorative elements, and structural integrity of the church remain intact as it continues to stand elegantly overlooking Greenville’s busy downtown. Grace Church, located on McBee Avenue in Downtown Greenville, South Carolina, is a Biblically sound church. The teaching was refreshing and challenging. The music was contemporary, yet not overwhelming. I liked the scriptures attached to each song, pointing the song back to the Word. They have multiple campuses, so the Pastor that spoke was at a different location and the sermon displayed on the big screen. Nice experience! Wonderful location. They have excellent childcare, beautiful music, sound teaching and many supportive programs for an array of people in need. I highly recommend the church. I am not a member but always enjoy visiting my sisters there. First time visitor at Grace Church - Downtown, and I enjoyed it immensely. Solid Biblical teaching and wonderful worship music. Great Church! They preach too much though. Makes me sleepy.
