I’ve been a lay-member of this church since 2011. Its leadership cares about its members and cares much about the gospel. I remain a member because the fruit of love and grace is evident in this church. It’s a great congregation, a lovely building, and solid teaching. The music tends to be traditional hymns, psalms, etc. Nothing showy. The church leadership eschews the Christian nationalism currently endemic to evangelicals. Edgefield Church was a result of a merger between historic Edgefield Baptist Church and Trinity Church (where I was a member) in 2020. You would be welcome at Edgefield. Come visit sometime. We left membership of this church because we felt that, under the current policies, our children and others within the church were unsafe due to the policy regarding offenders against children. I believe that extending cheap grace to these offenders who are either currently on the registry, those who have been removed, or those who have not yet been prosecuted, harms children and abuse survivors. Bonhoeffer rightly said, “Leniency to the dishonest is cruelty to those they injure.” I would like to see the elders of this church extend careful grace instead of cheap grace, exercising wisdom and discernment. An offender should never have been allowed to use the same bathroom facilities as children. I don’t think it’s appropriate to praise an offender without qualification or encourage parents to get to know offenders against children. Evidence of dishonesty on the behalf of offenders should result in immediate permanent exclusion from the church. The risk of legal liability should never prevent a church from investigating whether historical abuse happened. The elder in charge of children’s ministries said to me that “offenders are in a vulnerable position”. This is backward: children and sexual abuse survivors are vulnerable to offenders. A repentant offender would act similarly to the good thief on the cross who said, “we are suffering justly”, rather than appearing to be victimized by the consequences of their actions. There are many faithful Christians attending this church. For their sake, we hope that the elders will write and follow robust policies, expediently, with the aim of protecting children and abuse survivors. I would invite the elders to post their policies on their website, as many churches do, and leave a link as a reply here, so readers of this review can rest assured that the issue has been adequately addressed. It is never too late to do the right thing and allow the good teaching this church has to prosper. I started in this church when I was first born I’m now 75 I have fond memories of going to church with my grandparents my great grandparents and my parents my great grandfather if the veins was on the board of deacons told his stroke in 1960 but he listen to the service for the next 20 years every Sunday history of this church I hope you continue for another 100 years A beautiful building to have Christmas Eve in Stunning 1800s church a much see
