What visitors say
This is a wonderful church full of kind people who are passionate about not just attending church, but growing in their faith and serving others both in and outside of the church. If you're a missionary, it's an especially welcoming and supportive church to be apart of. Excellent church. Solid doctrine and the smartest preaching I've ever heard. Keeps the Bible above 'tradition' or culture. The First Bible Church (FBC) Membership Class handbook, pages 2-3, be talkin’ ‘bout Scripture Alone as the vibe of a “true church,” but the head pastor, atSteveBatemanFBC, dropped a wild one on X (12/12/23), that “Sometimes the Bible doesn't say something directly because it expects you to be smart enough to pick it up,” thus emboldening the FBC "men of God" to make stuff up. Behold their “Church Membership Covenant”—a man-made shackle nowhere found in the New Testament, propped up by out-of-context Lamentations 3:22-23 and Romans 12:10, pushin’ folks to sign on the dotted line and slide it to an Elder just to join the FBC fam—straight-up coercion, like you ain’t right with God ‘til you sign their contract. They elevate water baptism to an idolatrous spectacle, makin’ folks jump through hoops with pastor interviews and testimony prep, like they can supplement the Holy Spirit’s job (Romans 8:16, 1Corin. 12:13) of givin’ that “you saved” vibe. Ref. FBC YouTube Live, Sunday 9:15 AM, 3/16/25, start @56:40 They point to the Great Commission and Acts 2:38, sayin’ water baptism’s a must, but then flip it and say it ain’t about salvation or forgivin’ sins, just some tradition they leanin’ into for “obedience” to hit The Lord’s Supper right. While they point to Acts 2’s 3000 gettin’ baptized, they wouldn’t even dunk ‘em today ‘cause it was too quick, and those folks didn’t even know the “Jesus died for your sins” gospel FBC confessth. The Apostle Paul flipped the script on the Acts 2 crew, sayin’ Christ didn’t send him to baptize but to preach the gospel of grace, keepin’ the cross front and center. The Lord’s Supper’s meant to be a chill meal rememberin’ Christ’s death for them in the room united by one Spirit baptism. Paul was just sayin’ don’t be a jerk at the Supper—wait for your crew, don’t hog the bread and wine. FBC was batting 1000 on the worthy manner front. But “Scripture Alone” FBC leadership, under the influence of the spiritually abusive 9Marks, has now been caught hijacking the Lord’s Supper in order to recklessly force their recent “God-pleasing church growth / reasonable purity of the church” pursuit onto the gathering, repurposing “examine yourself” and “unworthy manner” to distract folks, despite the double-talk to the contrary, into proclaiming their own worthiness til He comes (Ref. 3/15/26, 10:45 AM service Madison, YouTube live start @ 1:12:25). The FBC communion prerequisite “worthiness” checklist typically includes these quid pro quo works emerging from the shadows of the ancient, apocryphal “Apostolic Fathers” document, The Didache: 1) water baptism (Didache 9:5); 2) confession of sins (Didache 14:1) and 3) reconciliation with others in the church (Didache 14:2). ——————— One egregious claim the smart “pastor” made occurred 11/19/23, 10:45 Service Decatur, start FBC YouTube video @37:02: It was a 9Marks boss move against the members of FBC, sayin’ that the “pastors, elders, deacons” of FBC are the “men of God” (41:36, 52:00, 56:22) of FBC, this comin' from some fresh logic sayin' that since Timothy (40:55), who preacher boils down to, “he a pastor, he an elder of the church”, was addressed with the highly technical term, “O man of God” in 1Timothy 6:11, and “the man of God” of 2Tim. 3:17 refers exclusively to Timothy, “impartial precision” demands only “pastors, elders, deacons” of a local church can get props as the church’s “men of God.” He quotes 2Tim. 3:16-17, but that verse ain’t about who’s a “man of God” nor how the Good Book is “delivered” — it’s about Scripture bein’ enough to make *any* Christian ready to roll without any extra sauce from FBC pastors. He quotes 1Tim. 6:11. But that verse just tells Timothy (and any believer) to chase righteousness, etc., ain’t about who gets props. FBC’s big dogs ain’t anything like Paul’s beloved son in the faith who was ordered to keep folks stickin’ to the glorious gospel Paul was trusted by God with. Timothy wasn’t about pushin’ no church membership contracts or blockin’ the communion table from some of those by one Spirit baptized into one body. Nice, well-structured clean church. The welcoming staff are informative and sweet. The experience with the congregation proves trying as a few were rude and visible upset I sat near them. Which is weird that a few cannot be mature enough to control their emotions for an hour or so. Yes and yes. Pastor Steve is an awesome teacher as he teaches the Word and doesn't sugar coat, which is refreshing. Grateful to find a church where you are welcomed, loved upon, encouraged and equipped in your walk with the Lord. This is a Christ centered church that seeks to equip its members to mature in their faith through sound Biblical doctrine and teaching. They truly do help you to know, love, obey and exalt Jesus Christ.
