What visitors say

What a marvelous event this was! I found out about this event last minute, Baroque Collegium Meditations , at this church in Santa Monica. I didn't even notice the denomination of the church. It turned out it's a sister church of mine, All Saints Episcopal church in Pasadena. The ambience was perfect for meditation. The lighting , the beautiful glass windows of the church. I had never been here before . The people working in the event were very helpful guiding guests to the restrooms and those with mobility issues were properly guided through an accessible restroom. The restrooms are so clean and well maintained. I am not surprised at their courtesy , inclusion and friendliness. I am proud to be part of the episcopal family. The event it self was a world class act. The music was simply delightful! The musicians and singers are quite experienced and well known in their field. I didn't want to be disrespectful so I didn't do a video of it. It was a very moving experience. I am very grateful to this community led by Reverend Nate and Katie. They welcomed me and my kids early in our spiritual journey back to God. I've really had to think about how to express my reason for leaving St Augustine's 2-1/2 years ago. I'm Jewish by birth and converted 26 years ago. I chose to become Episcopalian. So it was disappointing and painful to sit through a 70-minute service on October 8, 2023, listen to a sermon about "love, love, love" and not hear a single word of compassion ~ or any mention at all ~ about the worst attack on Jews since the Holocaust. The following week, that omission was justified by saying "We didn't know how bad it was." That felt like a dagger to the heart because it was that priest in whom I placed my trust to teach me, to hear my confessions during Lent and receive counseling. From my perspective, this was an individual who "walked the walk" more authentically than anyone I'd encountered in my then-23 years as an Episcopalian. There was wall-to-wall graphic coverage from early morning on October 7, it was all over the internet, and it was in the papers. It strains credulity to believe neither person on the alter heard or read anything. What hurt most is the voices on the alter expressed what felt like sincere empathy each time a horror was inflicted on marginalized groups, for natural disasters, for humanity. It sadly didn't happen in October 2023. My faith was broken in those 2 weeks and I haven't been able to bring myself to set foot in any church since then. I have spoken with 2 trusted friends since childhood about what wasn't acknowledged at a church I'd loved so much. One is a prominent Deacon in the Catholic church who said, among other things, "today I am a Jew"; the other is a pastor with the UCC Church because my heart ached, still does, and needs to be fed. I understand now that Jesus and God never hurt me ~ it was the humans on the alter. Humans make mistakes. It's not unreasonable to expect better from those who teach and preach. Warm and inclusive community of people St. Augustine by-the-Sea Episcopal Church has become a place where I feel genuinely welcomed, seen, and supported. What I appreciate most is the sense of inclusivity you feel the moment you walk through the doors—everyone is embraced exactly as they are, without judgment, pressure, or dogma. We attended a small service and had our dog blessed, there was music and a short sermon and it was a lovely special day, we drove from Lg Beach and really enjoyed this church.
