I attended Candlewood Church for approximately a year and a half. During that time, Pastor Glen and his wife were initially friendly and welcoming. At one point, I submitted a prayer request online regarding my marriage. Pastor Glen called me and remarked, “Do you know how many people see that prayer?” I shared a little about the struggles I was facing, and he responded that he would need to speak with my husband to hear his side of the story and determine whether what I shared was true. Last year, I confided in Pastor Glen and his wife about the emotional and verbal abuse I was experiencing in my marriage, as well as my feelings of emotional abandonment. I also asked if there might be a church member with a spare bedroom for me and my children, since I was considering separation and did not feel emotionally safe at home. At the time, I nearly sought shelter at a domestic violence home but ultimately did not go. Later, Pastor Glen called me and said, “Stop telling people I don’t care.” He told me that he believed I was harming my children by separating and insisted that my husband and I simply needed therapy and to “work it out.” I explained that we had already gone through several rounds of therapy without change. I asked him, “What do you do when you’ve tried everything, and your spouse still refuses to change and continues these behaviors?” He admitted, “I don’t know, this is beyond me.” After that call, I felt devastated. I cried, felt alone, and deeply hurt. I did not feel compassion, empathy, or support in that moment, nor was I provided with any resources or constructive solutions. Shortly afterward, I discovered that Pastor Glen had shared details of our private conversation with his worship pastor, who then told my husband. My husband confronted me, saying, “I heard you didn’t like what the pastor said. Maybe you should listen to them and stop trying to leave me.” This left me feeling that my confidentiality had been violated and that the trust I had placed in my pastor was betrayed. It is my belief that Pastor Glen may not be adequately equipped to respond to situations involving abuse. Advising a couple to stay together simply because the abuse is not physical ignores the real harm of emotional and verbal abuse, which can severely impact both the spouse’s mental health and the children who witness it. I eventually left Candlewood Church after that experience. A week later, I found a new, supportive church community that listened with compassion, provided resources, and stood alongside me in my healing journey. That care helped me feel less isolated and more hopeful. Since leaving, I have had no further contact from Pastor Glen, and I never received any follow-up from him or his wife. I am sharing my experience because I would not want anyone else to go through something similar—feeling unseen in their pain and unsupported in their time of need. Very sweet pastor and wife. There for me when I least expected. Thanks for going beyond for my families funeral 🙏 ❤️ You guys are such sweet Christian ✝️ pastors.
