What visitors say
Stunning stained glass! It's worth going to see the architecture and stained glass. Go on a tour if you can to get insider information. The 7th floor observatory was worth it as there are great views. I went during the week, and in between school tours, it was quiet. I was dropped off my an Uber at a round a out and had to go to the right for the main entrance, which was clearly marked from where I was. The gardens outside were also nice. Of all the places we've been on vacation, this one tops the list. Even if you're not religious, there's something here for you, physically, spiritually. It's an awe inspiring place, that truly stirs the soul. The craftsmanship that went into building and maintaining this space is impressive. Every nook and cranny has some story to tell out a little secret to be revealed, if you're just willing to look for it. This is a place for EVERYONE, regardless of what you look like, where you come from, or whom you love. I only wish more places embodied that same spirit. After-hours tour (June-August). Take a guided tour of the bell tower, 333 steps. Informed guides and interesting facts. Beautiful overlook of the city. A view of the Nave and Bishop's Garden is also worth visiting. Absolutely beautiful, tons of history, terrific tour guide (Chris who has worked there 31 years!). I reminded my family that this is a privately funded facility and the Cathedral is an Episcopal church. Then everything made sense. We are Roman Catholic and so, my kids asked some questions about the "pride flags". We really enjoyed taking our time to look at all of the architecture, stained glass windows, sculptures, stone work, iron work, etc... We especially liked the different chapels, the information about the restoration of the organ, and extraordinary iron gate near the front of the cathedral with roses, other flowers, and the head of a butterfly. Washington National Cathedral is truly a wonderful place to visit. Visiting here is a deeply rewarding experience. Every stone and architectural detail of the cathedral carries history and stories. For visitors who appreciate history or religion, it is absolutely worth exploring slowly and carefully. From the observation level on the 7th floor, you can enjoy a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of Washington D.C., Virginia, and Maryland. Along the corridors, informational displays help explain what you are seeing, making the scenery more meaningful and engaging. The gardens are beautifully and carefully maintained. At sunset, the white stone exterior is softly covered with a golden glow, giving the cathedral an even more sacred and peaceful appearance. Overall, it is a place that inspires both reflection and appreciation.
