What visitors say
I came to Calvary Church during a season of searching — not casually, but with intention. I was specifically looking for a Baptist congregation because of my deep personal connection to First Baptist Church in Lakeland, where I recently had the privilege of contributing to their campus through my work with Distinct Designs Custom Cabinets and Casework in Largo. Only about four months ago, I was sanding surfaces, assembling drawers, fitting cabinetry, sweeping floors, and delivering finished pieces room by room — all alongside the great Jarek from Poland, one of the finest craftsmen I’ve ever known. To build even a small part of a church like FBC Lakeland was an honor. I prayed quietly as I worked, imagining the countless believers who would one day use those spaces. That experience left a mark on me, and it made me long for a Baptist church family of my own. That longing is what led me to Calvary. From the moment I arrived, the people here were warm, kind, and genuinely welcoming. The pastoral care team reached out quickly. Gaye Lene was attentive and organized, and both Pastor Mike and Pastor Justin took the time to speak with me about baptism and next steps. Their willingness to meet, listen, and guide me meant a great deal. Calvary is a large, active congregation with strong teaching, heartfelt worship, and a sincere commitment to Scripture. You can feel the love of Christ in the way people greet you, pray with you, and make space for newcomers. For many, this church is home — and I can absolutely see why. But as I continued my journey, something unexpected happened: I found myself drawn back to a place that had been quietly woven into my life for decades. I ultimately found my spiritual home at St. Alfred’s Episcopal Church on Curlew in Palm Harbor — a church I likely attended as a child with my grandfather, Harry B. Vassie, co‑founder of the NSA and later a beloved member of the Palm Harbor community. He served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary on Lake Tarpon and carried himself with the kind of dignity and quiet service that shaped my understanding of faith long before I had words for it. For the past nine years, I’ve walked with Father Pete at Enterprise Dog Park — a man who never pushed, never preached at me, never tried to steer me. He simply listened. Month after month, year after year, he offered a gentle, patient presence that spoke louder than any sermon. And today, when he preached, something in his words reached a place in me I didn’t expect. His sermon brought tears to my eyes — not from sadness, but from recognition. From the sense that I was finally standing where I belonged. So while Calvary was an important part of my journey — and I am grateful for the time I spent there — my path ultimately led me somewhere else. That doesn’t diminish Calvary in the slightest. Not every church is meant for every person, and that’s part of the beauty of the Body of Christ. Different voices, different traditions, different ways of drawing people closer to God. Calvary is a good church with good people, and I’m thankful for their hospitality. If you’re searching, Calvary is absolutely worth visiting. And if your journey takes you somewhere else, that’s okay too. Sometimes God leads us through one door so we can recognize the next one when it opens. Thanks but no thanks. In this country we have the freedom of the press, and Google reviews is a way for citizens to participate. I hope that a spiritual awakening can occur at this place and that they can find the freedom and purity found in Jesus Christ, savior of the world. Wealth plays a factor in this church. They only care about property and that's it. They show nepotism and it shows. Do not waste your time at a place like this. A shame this is a church done wrong all around. The church is a true believers church. They spend quality time in praise and worship and the messages are very uplifting. My parents went to visit last Sunday. My dad is in treatment for cancer and they are only there for a few months. They wanted to find a church to go to while they were there. They enjoyed the service. On the way out my dad reached to get a welcome packet and one of the greeters said he couldn't have one if you not "joining" the church and was very rude. If this is who you have greeting your new visitors, I can see why people would rather not go to church at all. Do better!
