Good church. Go with my grandparents. They are energetic and entertaining. They don't really do much welcoming for new people though. I feel like you can go in and go out without getting talked to once. They preach a good message, and you always know timing because the sermons are consistently one hour. Yet another church in Bloomington where you're invisible if you're a single middle aged guy. Great sermon on healing and inclusion, but no one spoke to me when I walked up to the "welcome" tables after the service. Update: The lead pastor Shawn got in touch with me. He didn't make excuses and owned up to areas where they'd dropped the ball. I gave SOCC a 2nd chance and they were more welcoming. The best church with the best people, I was so welcome as an exchange studant there and I will never forget how amazing it was!! Not bad. I typically attend a Unitarian church, but my son’s good friend goes here, so we decided to check out their services. Cons: Today’s sermon was based on Dave Matthews Band lyrics and how they relate to scripture. I found it a bit boring and was hoping for something deeper and more inspirational. Pros: The pastor’s heart is in the right place, and he’s an excellent public speaker. A major highlight was seeing how diverse the congregation is. Ironically, more liberal churches often aren’t as diverse. I loved seeing people from all walks of life come together to celebrate shared values. The musicians are excellent, definitely more fun than singing traditional hymns. There were a lot of young people, families, and children of all ages. The best staff anywhere! Worship is top notch and sermons are presented in a relatable, non-condescending way that will touch your heart for sure. Best children's program around as well!
