What visitors say
I think the review is best said in their ambition - to be a community of people following Jesus and learning to live in His ways. The community is a welcoming and kind one. The leadership emphasizes a faith in Jesus far higher than an assumption of knowing all the answers. The music is poetic, contemplative, and celebratory. Even the building itself, a 1930's Presbyterian Church, echoes a message that the church preaches; a long, steady, and faithful dedication to Jesus. I love being here and it has helped my faith in the most profound way. A beautiful place with contemplative ministers who demonstrate wisdom in their theological reflection, thoughtfulness in their exhortation, and humility in their leadership. Sitting under their teaching can be a breath of fresh air without an ounce of escapism or mind-numbing Christianese. That said, many here struggle to connect with the community and feel thwarted, even alienated when trying to engage in corporate worship. Attenders who have been here for years report that they are no more connected, known, nor empowered to participate by attending in person than they are by streaming. Liturgy and responsive readings allow some participation, but little is offered to orient newcomers so that they may engage more meaningfully. There is almost no consistency in the expression of worship through music other than obscurity; the worship leaders are often the only ones singing because they don't teach the songs nor have they built a mutual repertoire with the congregation - with the exception of the sending song which is never varied and further alienates folks who can't participate because they have a different vocal range than one song can accommodate. There is no welcome or easily identifiable avenues of accessing the life of the church when attending in person - there aren't even announcements about groups meeting on site at the time of service, let alone directions as to where to go to be a part. The chapel is offered as a place to receive prayer but there is no direction at the chapel, leaving folks standing at the door ignored until they leave. Even long time attenders describe the congregation as disconnected and aloof, and it's true that people barely greet one another and only when directed, and then there are no introductions or follow up after service. As a contemplative church, it can be a great service to watch at home where you can skip the myopic music and still get a meaningful message. If, however, you're looking for a body of believers with which to belong, to worship and do life together, this is a difficult church to get to know - that seems even less interested in getting to know you. If, however, that anonymity and disengagement ministers to you because you've got a lot going on elsewhere, this can be a nice spot to show up to on Sunday mornings without much interference or demands. You can come and pass unnoticed when you need to, which can be a healing space for a season. JWell has a very special place in my heart. Whether online or in person, all worship is authentic and always challenges and encourages me to walk more deeply with Jesus. Christ is preached. The teaching pastors have a gift for bringing relevant messages directly from the Word that hit home in our lives today. The community is welcoming, lots of young families, singles, and couples. There's a marked absence of dogma and "religious spirit" barriers that make it a welcoming place for people who may not feel as comfortable in a more conservative community. The music is more of a poetic style than other contemporary churches I've been to. The sermons are insightful, educational, & focused on the spiritual growth & actions of the parishioners. You can listen to a sermon podcast to get an idea of the tone & style of the weekly message. The music is really special with a variety of talented musicians participating in any given worship. The people of JW are warm & friendly. The children's ministry is very active & engaging.
