What visitors say
Such an amazing church that really gives European church/cathedral vibes. We went to a concert by Christopher Houlihan and the organ is amazing. Also they had a book that explained the different stained glass and statues in the church- super cool! The Riverside Church is an absolutely stunning Neo-Gothic Church conceived by John D. Rockefeller Jr. along with Harry Emerson Fosdick. The church was constructed between 1927-1930. Allen & Collens and Henry C. Peyton were the primary architects. The church is very impressive in size and design. The stained glass is beautiful and the church isn't at a lack of lighting. From across the river it looks beautiful alongside Grant's Tomb. There are places you visit—and then there are places that move you deeply the moment you arrive. The Riverside Church is undeniably the latter. Rising majestically over Manhattan’s Morningside Heights, this awe-inspiring Neo-Gothic masterpiece has stood as both a spiritual sanctuary and a cultural beacon since its opening in 1930. Commissioned by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and inspired by the grandeur of France’s Chartres Cathedral, the church’s 392-foot tower still reigns as the tallest church tower in the United States—a breathtaking symbol of faith reaching toward heaven. But what truly sets Riverside apart isn’t just its architecture—it’s its living legacy of purpose. From its earliest days, Riverside was envisioned as more than a place of worship. It has been a center for social change, inclusion, and courageous dialogue, hosting world-shaping voices like Martin Luther King Jr., who delivered his powerful “Beyond Vietnam” speech from its pulpit. The church has also welcomed global leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu—cementing its role as a moral crossroads of justice and faith. Walking inside, you are enveloped by stunning stained glass, intricate carvings, and a sacred stillness that somehow coexists with the building’s vibrant community life. Beyond Sunday services, Riverside has long been a powerhouse of outreach, offering food programs, prison ministry, immigrant support, and advocacy for the marginalized—living out a faith that is both deeply compassionate and boldly active. What makes Riverside truly exceptional is its heart: an interdenominational, interracial, and radically welcoming community where people from all walks of life are embraced and valued. In every sense, The Riverside Church is not just a building—it’s a movement, a voice, and a sanctuary for both the soul and society. Whether you come seeking beauty, history, or a deeper connection to purpose, you will leave inspired. There are many jumbo-sized ornate churches in Manhattan, but Riverside Church has been my favorite so far. There’s so many levels, and each is fully dressed with statues and flair. Came to Savoy100 event. The Right place to host swing dancing events and similar main hall is huge and very nice.
