Being a welcoming church is a great thing and every true Christian should be open to all, but “affirming” sin of any kind (as your website states) goes directly against God’s expectations for us to rebuke and/or turn away from sin. Jesus said, “Go and sin no more,” not “Stay and sin some more,” nor did He ever state that He affirmed sinfulness. No sin is praiseworthy, nor is it affirmed anywhere in The Holy Bible. To be authentic followers of Christ Jesus, we must all deny our earthly lusts and come to earnest repentance (for every one of our current or past wrongdoings). Anything that goes against God’s design, sullies one’s soul, or breaks His commandments MUST be repented for. We need to find sincere spiritual contrition (true guilt for sin) and we’ll never find that if we think our sinfulness is okay solely because it was praised, accepted and affirmed by the church. Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.” 2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. Jeremiah 25:5 They said, ‘Repent now everyone of his evil way and his evil doings, and dwell in the land that the Lord has given to you and your fathers forever and ever.’ If we want to affirm anything, we should be affirming that we’re all sinners and we all fall short, and that’s why everyone needs to repent. By accepting sin, you are consciously going against God’s commands and law; by affirming sin, you are deliberately denying God’s Word and truth! An exclusion of God results in an inclusion of Satan. You cannot live in habitual sin yet also live for God: Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins. 1 John 2:3-5 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. Titus 1:16 They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work. FYI, Jesus spoke of hell more than heaven and sin more than love. Throughout the Bible, the need for genuine repentance is an underlying requirement, not merely God’s suggestion or recommendation. We must have a full change of heart and mind, leading to unquestionable belief/trust/faith and total repentance. With that said, no man/woman is more worthy of redemption than another and Christ’s ultimate sacrifice can set anyone free from sinful bondage. Everyone can find salvation and be born again by earnest repentance, genuine sorrow for sin, a change of heart/mind, and belief/trust in Jesus Christ. We’re all messed up and that’s why we need a perfect Savior. But, don’t follow false teachings and/or deceptive doctrines that claim a sinful lifestyle is an acceptable choice as Christ expects us to turn from ALL SIN. We’ll still slip up here and there but real salvation is a nonstop commitment to turn away from the things which God declared are wrong. If God called something an abomination in His own book, then who are we to affirm those same exact abominable acts? 2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. Everything stated here is backed up by scripture. Don’t seek affirmation for your sins, but rather, earnestly repent for them, place all of it at Christ’s feet, and put God first in your life for once. In doing so, you’ll be given new desires and a new mind. We must die to selfish desires and live for His selfless gift and sacrifice for all. I went there last Sunday. They are the most welcoming and loving people Ive ever met. They are also diverse even though they are a small congregation. A friend and I went just checking the place out and as soon as we walked through the door we felt very welcome. The pastor even sent me a card in the mail (hand written) thanking me for coming. I will definitely be coming back. I was super impressed. I've been a very active member at Woodland for 26 years! A faith community that truly walks the walk. ALL are welcomed and embraced. In my 20th year as a member of Woodland. It is a welcoming, diverse faith community that represents the teachings of Jesus. Woodland is warm, welcoming and truly exudes love. It’s a church that accepts you for who you are and where you’re at. You should check it out!
