What visitors say
This church has had very positive and very negative impacts on my life. I have seen this church present oversimplified solutions to complex problems, which can be very attractive, but this review’s purpose is to think holistically about how Mosaic’s church culture warrants a closer look. As it usually is, my story and Mosaic’s are complex. I’ll give some highlights here for brevity. My main goal is just that young people (especially college students) go into community here with their eyes open. I hope but do not expect leadership to change. I would not be surprised if there is a reply to this review that denies and over spiritualizes any shortcomings. I would also not be surprised if a reply passively paints me as a person who needs to grow… I do! But that is not what this post is about. -Many MANY people have left this church over more than a decade, not just because Seattle is a transient city (as leadership may say). People have continued to leave because they did not feel cared for by the leadership of this church when they were hurting. -There is a tendency to brush off problems and hurt in this church and ignore genuine concerns brought up by members. -This church has a culture of empowering leaders with zeal, charisma, and spiritual gifting. While this isn’t inherently wrong, they promote these traits over strong character. People who are introverted, lead humbly, and don’t need the spotlight are often overlooked and disregarded. -The movement this church is a part of, the Antioch Movement of Churches, puts great emphasis on learning the Antioch way of doing things. If you want to be brought in to the inner circle or just be fully included, you need to become more like them. -This puts more emphasis on (I am going to use a scary word) INDOCTRINATION, then on being the unique person God created you to be, transformed by his love. -In the Church, we should belong before we believe. This church has shown a tendency for the opposite. If you have disagreed with them on certain hot topics of our day, you may be told to leave and find another flock. -The leaders at this church have a tendency to portray themselves as the tip of the spear in a very worldly city. If you want to be a part of what God is doing, they imply that you need to be at this church or attend one that is very similar. -I am sure their leaders would vehemently deny this above claim. There is much feigned humbleness (maybe some genuine) but you’ll recognize it when you see it. -There is more… classic stuff like lack of real accountability, lack of qualifications of pastors, unappreciated and under compensated staff, charismania, revivalism, lack of transparency, putting leaders on pedestals, bad theology taught in their training school, burn out culture, toxic expectations of college students to give everything, and the list goes on… No church is perfect. We are all sinners 100%. Yet that does not mean we have to stay where we are. All of what I have shared is based off my personal experience. I do believe this church does do discipleship intentionally and effectively (yet some times heavy handed). They preach the Gospel, believe in the power of God for today, and most importantly they do love Jesus very much. Such wonderful staff and the minister is one of the best! The community involved is also welcoming with open arms and always wanting to bring you into the church family. I am from Alaska and while visiting Seattle I attended the 7:00pm Easter service. The atmosphere was radiant, the people were welcoming, and the songs were not only beautiful but powerful. The sermon was so moving, it touched my heart and left me in tears. The stories and testimonies shared were inspiring. This church community feels like a family, they treat everyone with love, compassion, grace, and tenderness- nomatter who you are or what you believe. They embody everything I could ever want in a church. I was privileged enough to witness and celebrate someone's baptism. The love, the joy, and the kindness in this church was something I had never felt before. Every interaction I had was sincere and felt personable. They truly made me feel at home. Thank you Mosaic Community Church for this memorable and joyous experience. I will certainly return here the next time I visit Seattle. I love Mosaic Eastside!! They are so welcoming and I always feel at home when I’m here. Leadership is so friendly and they want to get to know you! And they have a warm cup of coffee and doughnuts when you walk in the door :) Their sermons are biblical and based on truth. i am pretty new to Seattle, moved here in September 2021 and began attending church at Mosaic in October. something i really love about this church is how they host the presence of The Lord in worship and prayer. if you are someone who is looking to grow in their relationship with Jesus in those ways, this is the place for you. since moving here and becoming more involved with the Mosaic church family, my relationship with Jesus has grown significantly. this family truly loves Jesus. they inspire me to keep my spirit sharp and to continuously seek God. i love being a part of this church family.
